Manchester United star Eric Bailly has hit back at the pundits who laid into him after his side’s defeat to Brighton. The central defender was the subject of brutal criticism from Sky Sports pundits Graeme Souness and Gary Neville after the 3-2 loss.

Neville claimed United would never win the Premier League with a defensive partnership of Bailly and Victor Lindelof. Souness chimed in, adding that Bailly did not know “if he’s in New York or New Year” during the dismal performance.

Bailly said : “I always take criticism well when they are constructive, when they are there to help and I actually like criticism but in a positive way. “But what Graeme Souness said was a little bit disrespectful because it became so personal. It’s not the sort of criticism that can help a young player improve and become a better player.”

Bailly was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2016 from Villarreal for a fee in the region of £30m.

The 24-year-old struggled with injuries last season, blaming the transition from La Liga to English football for his ailments.

And the Ivorian reiterated that the scathing criticism from the Sky Sports duo went too far.

He added: “I think the criticism was a bit harsh, particularly from people who have played the game and have probably made mistakes themselves during their career.”

Bailly will hope to be given another chance to prove himself when United take on Tottenham on Monday.

Mourinho’s side won the corresponding fixture 1-0 last season with Anthony Martial’s late goal proving the difference.
