The most titles (Manchester United, 13), the most points in a season (Chelsea, 95), the all-time goalscorer (Alan Shearer, 260).

Chances are, you already know, or can at least guess, these bog-standard stats about the league that we’re repeatedly told is the world’s most exciting. But what about those weird and wonderful facts that only master statisticians can compile?

Twenty-five years ago to the day that the Premier League kicked off, here’s a look at 25 things about it that you may not know.

1. This one may make you feel old

Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku weren’t even around when the Premier League first started. And they remain the only players born after August 1992 that have netted a PL hat-trick.

2. Only one player born before 1960 has ever scored a PL hat-trick

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s Leeds’ Gordon Strachan. He achieved the feat against Blackburn in 1993 at the age of 36.

3. Only two players have ever scored PL penalties with both feet

Step forward the impressively ambidextrous Obafemi Martins and Bobby Zamora.

4. Balotelli’s assist

Despite making 70 PL appearances, Mario Balotelli only has one goal assist to his name. But what an assist it was. The Italian maverick set up Sergio Aguero in the last minute of the 2011-12 season to help Man City lift their first title in 44 years.

5. Leicester’s miracle escape

A year before they achieved the unthinkable by winning the title, Leicester City broke a new record at the opposite end of the table. The Foxes endured 140 days at rock bottom during the 2014-15 season, the longest a PL team has ever done so without being subsequently relegated.

6. Three PL players have managed to get sent off without even touching the ball

Keith Gillespie , Andreas Johansson and Dave Kitson are the three hot-headed guilty culprits.

7. When it comes to penalties, Yaya Toure is your man

Of all the players to take ten or more spot kicks in the Premier League, the Ivorian is the only one to have a 100% success rate.

8. Only four outfield players have played every minute of a PL champion’s campaign

Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (2016/17) and John Terry (2014/15), Manchester United’s Gary Pallister (1992/93) and Leicester City’s Wes Morgan (2015/16) certainly couldn’t be accused of not earning their Premier League winner’s medals.

9. In stark contrast, Richard Wright has two PL title medals to his name, despite only playing a dozen times across the two seasons

The goalkeeper made just 12 appearances for Arsenal in the 2001/02 season and didn’t make it onto the pitch at all during Man City’s triumphant campaign in 2013/14.

10. Duncan Ferguson did occasionally use his head for less aggressive reasons

The fiery Scot is one of only two men to score a PL hat-trick of headers (Everton vs. Bolton, 1997), with the other being Salomon Rondon (West Brom vs Swansea in 2016).

11. Peter Crouch may have not scored a hat-trick of headers, but he has scored 50 times with his bonce

That’s more than 15 teams have managed in their entire Premier League history.

12. Scoring an own goal, scoring at the right end and assisting a goal all in the same match is quite an achievement

Only three PL players have managed the feat, Wayne Rooney, Kevin Davies and Gareth Bale. But the latter went one better by receiving a yellow card too.
