A new survey by IPSOS Synovate has found Deputy President William Ruto and Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru were the most corrupt individuals in Kenya. The damning 2018 IPSOS report on graft, released on Wednesday, August 22, showed Kenyans strongly believed the deputy president was the most corrupt leader in the country, followed closely by Waiguru.
The report indicated 33% of Kenyans named the DP as the most corrupt person they knew, whereas 31% mentioned Waiguru. According to the survey, some 32% of Kenyans also believed corruption was the biggest problem in the country and appreciated the efforts being made by President Uhuru Kenyatta in fighting the vice.
The survey further revealed 82% of Kenyans were aware of at least one graft scandal by July 2018, up from 65% in June 2016. The top corruption scandals cited in the report included the National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Power, sugar and maize importation scandal. In addition, some 51% of Kenyans strongly believed that the president was sincere in the ongoing fight against corruption and impunity. Both Ruto and Waiguru had been mentioned in a number of mega graft scandals and this may have influenced the way Kenyans think about the two leaders.
Some of the scandals cited in the survey include the Sh468 Million NYS saga, Kenya Power, the illegal sugar importation and maize importation scandals.
The survey also shows that 11 per cent of the people believe that President Uhuru Kenyatta is corrupt, while five per cent say that former president Mwai Kibaki and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga are corrupt as well.
