Man City Star dismisses Manchester United title threat

Ilkay Gundogan does not consider Manchester United a threat this season, tipping Chelsea and Liverpool to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League.

The midfielder answered questions for fans on his Instagram page and was asked who would win the title this season if Pep Guardiola’s side fail to defend their crown.

Gundogan wrote: ‘Chelsea and Liverpool seem to be the strongest rivals this year.’

His selection of Chelsea will perhaps raise eyebrows as the Blues rebuild in their first season under new boss Maurizio Sarri, though the Reds have widely been backed to challenge after a busy transfer window.

Gundogan didn’t sit on the fence with his answers and also weighed in on the seemingly eternal question of which superstar is the better player, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

The 27-year-old came down firmly on the Barcelona talisman’s side with his one word reply.

He also labelled the Argentinian as the best player in history, and revealed that Kaka was his hero growing up when answering another question.

Gundogan was also asked which striker is the most talented that he’s worked with.

He replied: ‘Most talented player in general was Mario Gotze when I just joined the club, he was incredible in training!

Choosing his diminutive former team-mate over the stars at Manchester City is surprisingly high praise for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder who has struggled in recent years.

Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze was the most talented player Gundogan has played with

Celtic Park is the ‘craziest’ stadium he has ever played in and Kevin de Bruyne should be rated as one of the three best players in the world after last season, according to Gundogan.

The former Dortmund man also gave supporters a more personal insight, admitting the worst moment of his life was a serious back injury suffered in 2013.

He wrote that it affected: ‘Not just my football career but also my personal life.’

Gundogan has now established himself and a key member of Guardiola’s squad and will hope to feature against Huddersfield on Sunday.
